Mountain Day: A National Holiday in Japan to Appreciate the Blessings of the Mountains

"Mountain Day" (Japanese: 山の日, Yama no hi) is one of Japan's national holidays, observed annually on August 11. It was newly established in 2016 with the aim of encouraging people to get closer to nature, appreciate the blessings of the mountains, and reflect on the significance of mountains in daily life and culture.

1.What is Mountain Day?

Japan is an island nation with about 70% of its land covered by mountains.
Since ancient times, mountains have held spiritual and cultural significance, closely linked to religion, agriculture, and the seasons.
To honor their importance, Mountain Day was established to encourage people to appreciate nature and spend time in the mountains, recognizing their role in Japan’s environment and heritage.

2. Why was August 11 chosen as Mountain Day?

The choice of date carries symbolic meaning: the character for the number 8 (八) resembles the shape of a mountain peak, and the number 11 looks like two standing trees, evoking the image of a forest.
This visual symbolism makes the date a fitting choice for celebrating mountains.
In addition to the nationally recognized Mountain Day, some prefectures have designated their own local Mountain Days.
For example, Yamanashi and Gifu Prefectures observe it on August 8, while Kagawa, Ehime, and Kochi Prefectures celebrate on November 11.

3.What do people do on Mountain Day?

Across Japan, a variety of events related to mountains, nature, ecology, and culture are held to celebrate the occasion. Among the most popular activities are hiking and mountain climbing.
Local governments and mountaineering groups often organize guided hikes into the mountains—Mount Fuji, Mount Hakkoda, and Mount Tate are especially popular destinations.
There are also ecological tours, environmental education programs, and lectures on mountain safety that teach participants how to live in harmony with nature.
Many communities organize volunteer activities such as trail maintenance and mountain cleanup efforts, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation.

Recommended item 2:Tenugui (Japanese hand towel)
Tenugui (Japanese hand towels) are traditional, lightweight, and quick-drying cloths known for their strong absorbency.
They can be used for wiping sweat, as headbands, or simple wrapping cloths. Their seamless edges make them both hygienic and durable.

More than just practical items, many tenugu patterns draw inspiration from the changing seasons, natural landscapes, and traditional motifs.
This perfectly reflects the spirit of nature celebrated on Mountain Day.

We’d like to introduce our original Tenugui (Japanese hand towel), designed to be in harmony with nature, perfect for both mountain climbing and everyday use.

【Yakuryokutei 】

The Yakuryoku Shrine on Mount Inari at Fushimi Inari Taisha has long been a place where people pray to the medicine god for health and longevity.

Sumo wrestlers throughout history have served as symbolic ambassadors for Yakurikitei.
